Preparing A Site For Building Work With Expert Tree Felling

LSJ Services Ltd recently completed a professional tree removal project for a customer in Loughborough, Nottinghamshire. The work involved the complete removal of two large conifer trees in preparation for planned building work, with the added requirement of processing all usable timber into 10-inch logs for the customer's wood burner.

The Project Requirements

Our customer was preparing their property for upcoming building work and needed two substantial conifer trees removed from the site. However, rather than simply disposing of the timber, our customer recognised the value in the wood and wanted to make use of it for their log burner.

They requested that we process the trunk wood into 10-inch logs, which they could then season and split for use as firewood over the coming years.

Planning The Tree Removal

Before starting any tree removal work, careful planning is essential. Our team visited the Loughborough property to assess the trees, evaluate the surrounding area and plan the safest, most efficient approach.

The proximity of buildings and other features meant that traditional felling was not an option. Instead, we would need to dismantle the trees systematically from top to bottom, a technique known as sectional felling or tree dismantling.

Phase One: Branch Removal

The first phase of the tree removal involved our qualified tree surgeon climbing each conifer and systematically removing the branches. This controlled approach reduces the tree's weight gradually, making it safer to dismantle the trunk in subsequent phases.

Using professional climbing equipment and techniques, our tree surgeon ascended the first conifer, working safely at height. Working from the outer extremities inward, branches were removed methodically. Each cut was carefully planned to prevent branches from falling uncontrollably or causing damage to property below.

All removed branches were fed through our 6-inch wood chipper, reducing them to chips that would be transported away in our truck for later processing into mulch. The chipping process continued throughout the branch removal phase, keeping the work area clear.

Phase Two: Trunk Dismantling

With the branches removed, the second phase involved climbing down the tree whilst systematically removing sections of the main trunk.
Our tree surgeon cut the trunk into manageable sections, working from the top downwards. Each section was carefully sized to be safely lowered to the ground without causing damage. Where necessary, we used rigging equipment to control the descent of heavier trunk sections.

Once the first conifer was completely dismantled, we repeated the entire process for the second tree.

Phase Three: Processing Into Firewood Logs

The final phase involved processing the trunk sections into 10-inch logs as requested by our customer. Using chainsaws, we cut the trunk sections into 10-inch slices, creating rounds that would be ideal for seasoning. This specific length was chosen by our customer to fit their log burner and storage arrangements.

We stacked the cut logs in a location specified by the customer, making certain they were positioned where air could circulate freely around them. Our customer now has a substantial supply of conifer logs that will need to season for approximately 12 months before use. After seasoning, the logs will need splitting before use in the log burner.

By processing the conifers into firewood rather than disposing of them, our customer has gained substantial value from trees that needed removing anyway.

Site Clearance & Finishing

With all three phases complete, we swept the entire work area thoroughly, removing sawdust, small wood fragments and any other debris. The completed project left our customer with a clear site ready for building work to commence, plus a substantial stack of conifer logs seasoning ready for future use.
