A homeowner in Loughborough contacted LSJ Services Ltd to remove two conifer tree stumps from their garden. The conifers had previously been felled, but the stumps remained at ground level, taking up valuable garden space and preventing the area from being used effectively.

Our team was tasked with grinding out both stumps and their root systems, providing a clean finish that would allow the homeowner to reclaim this part of their garden.

Initial Assessment & Planning

Tree stump removal requires careful assessment before work begins. Our team visited the property to examine both conifer stumps, evaluating their size, root spread, and location within the garden.

Conifer trees develop extensive root systems that spread widely beneath the surface. These roots can extend well beyond the visible trunk diameter, meaning stump grinding work must address not only the central stump but also the larger structural roots that provide stability to the tree.

We discussed the homeowner's plans for the area and confirmed their preference for the resulting wood chip. Rather than having it removed, they wanted the material left on site to use as garden mulch, which would break down naturally over the winter months.

Cutting Stumps To Ground Level

The first stage of the project involved cutting both conifer stumps down to ground level using a chainsaw. Although the trees had been felled previously, the stumps had been left several inches above the ground, which needed to be addressed before stump grinding could begin.

Our tree surgeon carefully cut each stump as close to ground level as possible, creating a flat surface that would allow the stump grinder to work efficiently. This preparation work is essential, as it provides the ideal starting point for the grinding process.

Cutting conifer stumps requires sharp chainsaw equipment, as the resinous wood can quickly dull cutting chains.

The Stump Grinding Process

With both stumps cut to ground level, we brought in our CE97 stump grinder.

This professional grade machine is specifically designed for stump removal work, featuring a powerful cutting wheel fitted with carbide teeth that grind through wood and roots with remarkable efficiency.

The CE97 stump grinder's design allows it to access confined spaces whilst providing the power needed to tackle substantial stumps.

Its manoeuvrability makes it ideal for residential garden work where access can be restricted by paths, fences, or planting areas.

Stump grinding begins by addressing the central core of the stump. The grinder's cutting wheel is positioned over the stump and gradually lowered, with the carbide teeth reducing the wood to fine chips. The operator works systematically across the stump surface, grinding down through the layers.

As the central stump is removed, attention turns to the root system. Conifer roots can be substantial, particularly the main structural roots that radiate out from the trunk base. These larger roots must be ground out to prevent regrowth and to provide a clean finish.

The grinding process continues below ground level, typically removing the stump and roots to a depth of 200-300mm beneath the surface. This depth provides adequate clearance for future planting or lawn establishment, whilst avoiding unnecessary excavation.

Working Around Root Systems

Conifer root systems present specific challenges during stump grinding. The roots spread horizontally rather than growing deep, creating a wide network that must be addressed systematically.

Our operator worked methodically around each stump, identifying the main roots and grinding them out individually. The CE97's cutting wheel can be angled to follow root lines, achieving effective removal without excessive ground disturbance.

Some roots extend beyond the practical reach of the stump grinder. These smaller peripheral roots will naturally decay over time and don't typically cause problems, so complete removal isn't necessary. The focus remains on eliminating the main stump mass and structural roots that could regenerate growth.

The CE97 Stump Grinder Advantage

The CE97 stump grinder is a professional machine that makes light work of even substantial stumps. Its powerful engine drives the cutting wheel at optimal speed for efficient wood removal, whilst the carbide teeth maintain their cutting edge throughout extended use.

What might take days with manual digging methods can be accomplished in hours with professional stump grinding equipment. For this Loughborough project, both conifer stumps and their root systems were removed in approximately two hours, demonstrating the efficiency of modern stump grinding technology.

The machine's design also minimises ground disturbance compared to excavation methods. Rather than digging out the entire stump and creating a large hole, grinding reduces the wood in place, leaving the surrounding soil relatively undisturbed.

Wood Chippings

Stump grinding produces a significant volume of wood chip. As the cutting wheel reduces the stump and roots to small pieces, this material accumulates around the work area.

Typically, we bag this wood chip and remove it from site, as many customers prefer a completely clear finish. However, for this project, the homeowner specifically requested that we leave the material for use as garden mulch.

Wood chip mulch provides several benefits for gardens. It suppresses weed growth, helps retain soil moisture, and gradually breaks down to add organic matter to the soil. Conifer wood chip is particularly effective as mulch, as it decomposes slowly and provides long lasting coverage.

Raking & Finishing

Once both stumps had been completely ground out, we raked the wood chip level across the area where the stumps had been. This created an even coverage that would serve as effective mulch whilst presenting a tidy appearance.

The raking process also helped to identify any remaining root fragments that might have been missed during grinding. These were addressed before finishing the work, providing the homeowner with a thorough result.

The area was left clean and ready for use, with the wood chip mulch spread evenly to provide immediate weed suppression. Over the winter months, this material would gradually settle and begin breaking down, enriching the soil beneath.
